Dixie Chicks Faux Pas
During a recent performance in London, singer Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks proclaimed "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas". She later added ".. one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view". She is obviously correct in her latter statement concerning American privileges.
What is also the case is that country music fans, offended by her remark about the president, also have the right to stop buying their CDs and skipping their next tour. Angry fans in Nashville have flooded the local station - some demanding a boycott of the trio's music.
It is fairly obvious that Natalie Maines was trying to "connect" with British fans when she made the statement, but it's a small world and statements made "across the pond" will soon be heard back here. Music fans in general prefer their favorite groups to be apolitical. Yes, she is free to make political statements while on stage, but she'd better be prepared for the fallout if her fans don't appreciate her comments and it hits her and the rest of the trio in their collective wallets.
