The Oscars
The nominations for movie Oscars are upon us again. This is where people in the movie industry reward one another with awards . . . probably because when the Oscars began, no one else cared to. The Oscars were begun by the Hollywood studio heads as a means of generating publicity for movies that had come and gone from movie theaters. For Oscar winners and nominees, there was the opportunity for studios to re-release the movies a second time and make more money off them.
In this day of pay-per-view, VCR tape and dvd rentals, there isn't any re-release of movies based on the results of the Oscars. Now a best actor or best actress (who the industry now refers to as an actor) means getting a bigger paycheck for their next movie. How anyone in tinsel-town can expect a reasonably intelligent person to believe any real judgement could have been used to compare one actor's performance in one role to another actor's in a completely different role is beyond belief.
In the case of the Oscars, I believe that we should all follow Woody Allen's lead and ignore the entire process and the overhyped broadcast.
