Ralph Nader and Presidential Politics

On February 22nd 2004, Ralph Nader announced (on Meet The Press) that he would be a candidate for President of the United States as the Independent Party candidate. He felt that both the Republican and Democratic parties were beholden to 'special interests' and only he truly would provide a democratic alternative to them. But his main reason for running was to remove George W. Bush from office.

After failed presidential bids in 1996 and 2000 under the Green Party banner, Nader now thinks he has a chance as an Independent candidate. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Don Quixote of presidential politics. Tilting at windmills that he sees as not giants but elephants and donkeys. But will Nader truly find his Sancho Panza to run as his vice-presidential running mate. Perhaps Ross Perot is available. Quixote's, I mean Nader's quest can only be the result of a massive ego or a form of dementia. He has been rejected by mainstream voters two elections running and to think a third try will be 'the charm' is ludicrous. At best his run will siphon votes away from the Democratic nominee and likely give the election to George Bush who Nader has sworn to remove from office.

Nader should permanently 'retire' from politics and try to maintain a shred of respectability. He can obviously add to the discussion of topics to be debated during the presidential election, but as a private citizen and not as a pitiable candidate.
