US Troop Withdrawal from Iraq
Peace activists and a sizeable segment of the US public have begun to call for withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq. The daily reports of the death of American Soldiers does indeed give any American pause about the cost of removing Saddam Hussein and giving the Iraqis an opportunity for a democratically elected form of government.
But to leave Iraq now would leave the Iraqis with no formal government in place. Religious factions would vie for control of the country as each would want to rule Iraq to insure their group would not be oppressed as with the former Hussein regime. The turmoil that would result might well provide the Baathist Party the opportunity to retake control of the country and return Saddam Hussein as president.
Removal of US troops from Iraq before an Iraqi government that represents all Iraqis can be elected and installed and before a sizable Iraqi police force and army can be put in place, would create a scenario in Iraq that the world would eventually have to deal with later, and one that would have been caused be a failure to finish the job started by the United States, Britain and Spain. It would also set the fight against terrorism back to that of September 10th 2001, when the problem was basically ignored, hoping it would all just go away.
