The 'Minority' Word
The Boston City Council has recently voted 12-0 to require the city of Boston to remove the word 'minority' from all city documents. A couple of City Councilors expressed the opinion that the word 'minority' should now be considered as off limits as the "N" word. That the term 'minority' was demeaning to blacks, hispanics (i.e. all people of color).
Here we go again. More nonsensical political correctness. The need to rewrite the dictionary because a few individuals want to interpret a word (or phrase) as meaning something other than it does, is not only annoying but maddening. A minority is just that. A group of individuals with something in common whose number is less than the number of another group with something in common. When the commonality is race, all hell seems to want to break loose. To attempt to define a minority as someone having less worth than someone else, is absurd. It refers to the number of people not their self worth.
When will this ludicrous concept of political correctness be done away with? It has turned our college campuses into, not a place of learning and discussion, but an arena where no one dares say anything for fear of being ostracized. We have seen 1984 and thought control is being attempted by those who insist on becoming the thought police - in control of everything we say and (if possible) what we choose to think.
The Mayor of Boston has shown some level of intelligence in refusing to sign this absurd legislation. Whether his veto is overriden by the City Council remains to be seen.
