Baseball Is Dead

For anyone who hasn't noticed it, major league baseball is dead. At this point, it's only a case of waiting for the patient to notice they no longer have a pulse. With player contracts in the stratosphere, ballpark income reaching its limit and the FOX network losing money on baseball game broadcasts, it's only a matter of time before the patient stops breathing. There is no way a league that pays so-called stars $20+ million a year can survive. Greed on the part of the owners and players has killed the major league game.

The only way to resuscitate this patient is a complete restructuring of the player pay scale and union contract. Team player salaries should to be set at 55% of each team's total income. Players would get a predetermined "base" pay and a percentage of the 55% set aside for team's payroll. Obviously some players would receive a larger percentage of team income than others based on performance and years of service. This is the only way to control owners propensity to spend more than they can realistically afford on free agents and draft choices and keep the major league game alive.
