Microsoft and Software Security

Through all the legal proceedings taking place between Microsoft, the US Justice Department and other interested parties, Microsoft has continued to promote the idea that PC users only need one operating system to choose from and that OS is Microsoft's. They see no need for competing systems as Microsoft has the computer users best interest in mind.

On October 12th of this year, Microsoft put out a security bulletin concerning their operating systems. The bulletin indicated that holes in the OS' security could allow hackers to take control of a PC running any of their OSs and steal credit card or password information. This security bulletin is the Redmond-based company's 58th this year alone. Since Microsoft purports that their OS alone is what all PC users need, perhaps they need to take another look at what the average PC users wants in an OS. Like they ability to use it and not have to worry about umpteen security holes that hackers could drive a Mack truck through and finding patch fixes on their website for each and every one of the holes.

With only one OS being used by 90% of PC owners, and Microsoft's proclivity to leave security holes in virtually everything they build and ship, users really do need alternate choices for OSs. Perhaps if Apple finally realizes building hardware and software isn't going to get them market share and they finally realize that building software and licensing it and getting out of the hardware business (their short stint of licensing shows other hardware developers could build a better Mac-like platform) Microsoft would have real competition. I'm not including Unix and Linux as the average PC user will never adopt these geek-associated operating systems.
