Microsoft's Latest Office Product

Microsoft has announced a new Office product to replace it's current Office 2000 product line. It is heavily promoting the product on TV in hopes of getting millions of users to buy the product.

The kicker is that the new Office product will only run under Windows XP, unlike previous versions of MS Office, which were supported by at least two previous OS versions for backward compatibility. It appears that Microsoft is attempting to push businesses and home users to buy and install Windows XP to be able to upgrade to the new office product. This leaves businesses in a quandry. If they stay with Windows 2000 and Office 2000, they may finds themselves unable to open documents from customers or suppliers if the documents are in the new Office format. But the cost of updating all business PCs to Windows XP and the new Office product will cut deeply into the businesses bottom line. Most large companies take years of testing before they approve and roll out a new OS. This is why most most have remained with Windows 2000 as their basic office PC OS.

Unless Microsoft relents and supports Windows 2000 with its new Office product (and many of the home user Microsoft OS still being used), it stands the chance of offering a new Office product with few takers. And the few takers will find themselves unable to share documents as their recipients will be unable to open them. Now that what I call a productivity feature!
