Evacuation of Gaza in the Middle East
The Israeli government has announced that it will evacuate all Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip in July of 2005. It will also evacuate a number of Jewish settlements in the West Bank area at the same time. Many settlers in Gaza are refusing to accept cash payments to move from Gaza to Israel proper and vow to fight if the Israeli army attempts to forceably remove them.
The spectacle of the Israeli army forceably removing Israeli settlers from their Gaza Strip homes will be very devisive with the State of Israel. The possibility of it changing into an armed conflict (many Israeli settlers have weapons to protect their settlements from Palestinian attacks) is also troubling. I would suggest a different tack. Since the Israeli government has decided to not destroy settlers homes for environmental reasons (synagogues will be destroyed after removing religious articles), why not notify settlers that refuse to accept buyouts, that as of the end of the evacuation period, settlers remaining behind will lose their Israeli citizenship and be subject to Palestinian Authority laws.
The prospect of losing their Israeli identity and having to live under Palestinian Authority rule should be enough to convince reluctant settlers that refusing to leave is fruitless and the prospect of becoming Palestinians unthinkable.
